Welsh Government issues statement on Improving Opportunities to Access the Outdoors for Recreation in Wales
“Wales need a better and fairer approach for outdoor recreation” said Lesley Griffiths, Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs.
The written statement comes after the Welsh Government undertook a consultation in 2015 to improve opportunities to access the outdoors for responsible recreation. Over 5500 responses were received.
You can read the statement on the Welsh Government website.
The British Horse Society agrees that Wales needs a better and fairer approach to public access for outdoor recreation which is less burdensome to administer, provides for the wide range of activities people want to participate in, with sensible safeguards for land management activities, and is encouraged that the Government will consult on proposals for making improvements in three key areas:
- Achieving consistency in the opportunities available for participation in different activities and how activities are restricted and regulated
- Simplifying and harmonising procedures for designating and recording public access
- Improving existing advisory forums and how access rights and responsibilities are communicated to all interests
The Society will be feeding into this process to ensure our call for much needed improvements to the amount of access that equestrians should have to the public rights of way network and access to the wider countryside are heard.
