Selling your horse or pony? The BHS have launched a ‘Sale Agreement’ service for Gold members to help you sell your horse with peace of mind that you’ve followed the rules and that your horse will be taken care of in its new home.
Selling a horse or pony can be a daunting process and it’s sometimes tempting to sell your horse without a written agreement in place. However, a legally compliant contract should be drawn up covering the essential points, as you risk fines if you unwittingly ignore the latest equine legislation.
The ‘Sale Agreement’ service* is quick and easy to use – just contact the BHS Legal Helpline who will give you access to the online portal. You will need to answer some questions about your proposed sale and our smart system will produce a legal document tailored to your circumstances and ensuring the interests of you and your horse are protected.
Our service will address
- whether the animal has a passport and has been microchipped
- any health-related issues
- providing for a trial period if you wish
- obligations for the buyer that relate to the horse’s welfare
- compliance with the law.
