About Us & Our Work
The British Horse Society was founded in 1947, and we have grown over the past 70 years to become the largest and most influential equestrian charity in the UK with over 108,000 members. We aim to protect and promote the interests of all horses and those who care about them, including the 3.5 million people in the UK who ride or who drive a horse-drawn carriage
During 70 years, the BHS has made a real impact on the lives of horses and horse owners with wide-ranging campaigns and initiatives. Our core foundations – education, welfare, access and safety – are more important than ever as they demonstrably make a difference to horses’ lives.
BHS Members and Volunteers
The BHS wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have today without our volunteers and members. They help us to fund our work in education, equestrian welfare, access and safety, and they also give us a greater voice when lobbying government on behalf of the horse, and those who care for them.
BHS membership gives a huge range of benefits to help you enjoy your life with horses. But more than that, membership is vital for helping us raise funds needed to improve access, safety, welfare and education for all.
Our enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers help us attend thousands of welfare cases each year, continue to campaign for rider’s rights, and raise awareness of diseases such as strangles.
Working with the law
We’re committed to supporting the best interests of horses and owners, and we work with the law and help our members to comply with the many requirements. Find out more information about how The British Horse Society works with the law.
