Alterreno

Set across 30 hectares in the heart of Tuscany, Alterreno stands as one of only two BHS-approved equestrian centres in Italy—and the sole facility where equestrian excellence is paired with transformative horsemanship. Under the guidance of Angelika Schneider, whose distinctive approach to communication, training, and care has fundamentally changed how horses and humans relate to one another.

About Us

Alterreno is a place that changes you—before you ever mount a horse.
One of only two BHS-approved equestrian centres in Italy, Alterreno sits in the rolling Tuscan hills, an hour from Pisa and Florence. Across 30 hectares of thoughtfully designed land, every structure, paddock, and decision serves a single purpose: to honour the intelligence, sensitivity, and true nature of the horse.

The facilities include 30 permanent stables (16 with private paddocks), a 20x60m indoor arena with French sand, mirrors, and irrigation, a 20x60m outdoor all-weather arena, an 800m woodchip canter track, a 2-hectare grass field with cross-country obstacles, and a unique Honeycomb training system—four 15m round pens within a 60m enclosed area for groundwork and liberty work. Specialist amenities include a foaling box, farrier station, solarium, wash bays, multiple paddocks for varied turnout, and kilometres of scenic trails.
Founded by Angelika Schneider, one of Europe's most respected voices in ethical horsemanship, Alterreno operates on a principle that transforms how horses and humans connect: true partnership begins when we learn to listen. Schneider's approach, refined over decades of studying equine ethology and non-verbal communication, reveals what happens when humans master the art of genuine dialogue with horses—trust, willingness, and connection emerge naturally. What she teaches is horsemanship in its purest form: the ability to read, respond to, and earn the respect of the animal before you.

Riders leave Alterreno as horsemen and horsewomen who understand something profound: the horse has always been speaking. We simply needed to learn the language.
Membership is selective. Prospective livery clients and students are carefully assessed to ensure alignment with the centre's core values: respect for horses as sentient beings, commitment to continuous learning, and the understanding that relationship transcends technique.
After Alterreno, nothing else feels the same.
