Bulgaria’s landscape is often known for its beautiful diversity. From the snowy covered peaks on top of the mountains to the flower-covered valleys, gradually giving way to the picturesque coastline that leads into the Black Sea.
Bulgaria was a host to a variety of ancient civilisations including the Thracians, Ancient Greeks, Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, East and West Slavs, Varangians and the Bulgars. These ancient civilisations have influenced the Bulgarian landscape we know today with many of their ruins still visible today.
On the Trail of the Thracians, Bulgaria 6th - 13th June 2020
8 days, 7 nights; 6 days riding
Our Bulgaria Challenge Ride leads through the heart of the Thrace, which you could argue is the principal cradle of European horsemanship. Follow hidden mountain trails and paths that are now little visited except by deer, wild boar and those in search of exciting riding.
The Thracian Valley is an ideal location for a trail ride because there are few roads, the meadows link together without fences and the crops include roses and lavender. Add in the delicious wines, spa mineral springs and regular swimming opportunities and the ride is complete.

About the Horses:
In this part of the Rhodopi Mountains a reliable, sure-footed horse is required. The horses you will ride are a developed from breed of Arabs by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 18th Century.
Over the years other bloodlines have been introduced including the Trakehner and the Eastern Bulgarian. The combination produces a well-schooled, forward-going horse that is comparable with an Irish Sports or Anglo-Arab.
