Recent studies have increased our awareness of Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome. We now know there are two distinct diseases: Equine Squamous Gastric Disease (ESGD) and Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD). The two diseases should be viewed separately and even if your horse has both, it doesn’t mean they are related.
Research shows that alfalfa is beneficial for horses with ulcers compared to grass-based forages, the high levels of calcium and magnesium found naturally in alfalfa act as a buffer to acidity. Feeding plenty of high-quality fibre that’s naturally low in starch and sugar, such as Dengie Healthy Tummy and Ulser Lite, increases chew time and encourages a healthy digestive tract.
The BETA approval mark for horses prone to Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) was set up in conjunction with, and is endorsed by, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), with very strict criteria about ingredients used in the products and claims that can be attributed to them - two Dengie feeds carry this approval mark:
- Dengie Healthy Tummy: A nutritionally balanced, medium-calorie, high-fibre blend of chopped and pelleted alfalfa, containing yeast and prebiotics to promote a healthy microbiome
- Dengie Ulser Lite: A low calorie, high fibre feed with tasty herbs, yeast and prebiotics to promote digestive health, particularly useful for good-doers and those who maintain weight with ease
