BHS Challenge Awards | July Focus - Equitots

1 July 2020

If you're looking for a strong bond with a healthy, happy horse, the Challenge Awards are perfect for you. You can learn how to care for horses, develop hands-on, practical skills and get stuck in with the day-to-day tasks.

It doesn’t matter what previous experience you have with horses, or if you’re a complete beginner. All you need is enthusiasm and a love for horses. You do not even need to own your own horse. You will receive expert guidance and support from BHS Approved Coaches and they will help you work towards and achieve your personal goals. You will be encouraged to enhance your knowledge at your own pace and advance on what's important to you. But most importantly, you’ll have fun along the way! Remember, there are no time limits, or constraints to complete an award so you can work at a pace to suit you to achieve your goals.

The BHS has made the decision to make Challenge Awards available for everyone (not just BHS members) and has reduced the registration fee up until the end of August 2020.

New challenge awards have also been added:

  • Horse Health
  • Horse Knowledge
  • First Pony Guide

Challenge Awards are delivered by BHS Accredited Professional Coaches and at BHS Approved Centres – these are currently being offered virtually.

July focus - Equitots

This months focus on Challenge Awards is on BHS Approved Centre ‘Equitots’, here is an update from them:

"Equitots Lanarkshire CIC is a small not for profit Approved Centre in Lanarkshire, Scotland. We enjoy working with children and young people who need a more nurturing approach to learning. When Covid19 meant we had to close our gates and hearts to the young people who visit I was devastated. We provide a much needed resource in our local community for young people who may not otherwise access horses and for those who have a passion for them and love them. Fortunately the BHS were quick to assist and developed online materials we could share with our visitors. This soon evolved to online Challenge Awards which we were delighted to deliver. A learning curve for us all on using Zoom, sharing screens and trying to be as creative and interactive as possible. We are now on our 5th group of online Challenge Awards and the feedback has been amazing, I think a few will return for the Bronze and Silver Awards and become BHS Members thanks to the online training. We were extremely fortunate to receive funding from Tesco Bags of Help and One Family Foundation to support delivery if the course, fund ZOOM Pro and help us develop materials of our own to also run a similar course aimed at under 12s, Primary Ponies. We would really recommend Centres to think about how they can reach out and engage their community during this time, the online awards have been an amazing resource and have really helped us flourish during this difficult time. We have delivered to 18 young people so far."
