Ride Out UK 2020 was a little different due to Covid-19, but that did not stop people getting involved and raising crucial funds for equestrian routes.
Ride Out UK is our annual campaign which celebrates and raises awareness of the great work we all do to protect and extend off-road equestrian routes. We encourage people to explore the great outdoors by taking part in organised rides or Rideathon, our sponsored hacking challenge, to raise money for the BHS Ride Out Fund.
Many rose to the challenge of Rideathon, riding (walking or cycling) 70km and raising £70 or more, as well as the few Covid-safe events that were able to take place. It was so wonderful to encourage people to get out and explore the great outdoors, especially at a time where public rights of way have never been busier – highlighting the need for safe off-road routes whilst raising over £9,000!
Since 2010, 4774 road incidents involving horses have been reported to us and 395 horses have been killed. Equestrians desperately need safe routes and the Ride Out Fund is used to restore, extend and create multi-user routes around the UK.
Our youngest participants of Rideathon 2020 were Eliza (6) and Beatrice (3) with their ponies Molly, a Shetland x Fell, and Buzz, an adventure explorer Shetland. They managed to raise £265 between them.
Eleanor and Alex also decided to take up the challenge together and raised £370 collectively.
“We have never tracked our hacks before so we are both intrigued to see how long it will take us to meet or exceed our targets!
By fundraising we hope to help the BHS to improve or create new riding routes, meaning more riders can get off the roads and enjoy the beautiful English countryside.”
BHS Isle of Man held their first large pleasure ride for Ride Out UK at Point of Ayre, it was a great success and they have put together a video of the day which highlights the fun had by all. You can watch the video here.
Like us, I’m sure you can’t wait to get back out on fun rides with friends. Ride Out UK will be back from May-October and we can’t wait for you to get involved.
We are just finalising a number of amazing rides, so please leave your contact details to be the first to know.
