UK Coaching urges the nation to pledge support for coaches as UK Coaching Week 2020 begins

15 Sept 2020

To coincide with the start of UK Coaching Week 2020 (14-20 September) UK Coaching is encouraging parents, players and athletes to recognise and support the people who provide great coaching to their communities by pledging their own time – or by simply saying thanks – to the millions of coaches who keep Britain active.

Three million people coach nationwide, and the COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on the remarkable people positively benefitting the physical and mental well-being of communities across the country. Sport and physical activity has been, and will continue to be, integral to the nation’s response to the coronavirus pandemic by having a positive impact on people’s mental and physical well-being.

A challenging time for coaches

The last five months have undoubtably been challenging for coaches and UK Coaching’s Director of Coaching, Emma Atkins, has said: “as restrictions are eased and more of us return to play, we will turn to coaches and expect them to integrate new controls to keep us all safe, so let’s ensure that we recognise and support our coaches across the UK for the vital work that they do.”

At the BHS, we feel very strongly that our Accredited Professional Coach (APC) community is one of the great benefits of becoming an APC. Although many may work in isolation we are one community brought together by the APC membership. The BHS has worked hard to support this community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic by providing ongoing advice, support and sharing useful resources such as risk assessments.

We have supported coaches by offering a revised assessment model with devolved assessments to allow coaches to continue to coach others and maintain their own personal development, and have recently launched four new Challenge Awards to help provide opportunities to coach remotely, and provided induction sessions to enable new coaches to be able to deliver the Awards.

How you can support coaches

The #GreatCoachingPledge is a national awareness campaign that empowers athletes, coaches and the public to showcase how Great Coaching can play a greater role in building a happier, healthier nation.

Whether you are just starting your journey with horses, want to develop your career, or need some help to progress to competing at a higher level, we’re calling on you to support Accredited Professional Coaches. Our register of Accredited Professional Coaches allows you to find someone to match the needs of you and your horse.

UK Coaching is encouraging the UK public to pledge their support by:

  • Recording a 10 second video to share on social media, explaining how you are pledging your support to coaches and how you will give your time and thanks to support the coaching community.
  • Posting UK Coaching’s #GreatCoachingPledge graphic or a photo of your local coach on your social media channels.
  • Write your pledge on UK Coaching’s #GreatCoachingPledge template and share a photo of yourself holding your pledge on social media.
