The British Horse Society (BHS) welcomes the Government’s proposals set out in the budget to abolish business rates for a year for all retail, leisure and hospitality business with a rateable value of less than £51,000. Whilst this is a fantastic step forward for small businesses, it remains unclear whether riding schools and livery yards are included within this proposal. The Chancellor has announced a review of the business rates scheme in Autumn and therefore we are still encouraging our members to write to their local MP to seek clarification and raise awareness of the dire consequences business rates are having on this sector of the equestrian industry.
We urge all equine businesses to utilise the information available on our website to continue to support us, to support them.
The BHS also welcomes the proposals set out by the Chancellor concerning sick pay relief to businesses impacted by the developing Covid-19 situation. In this time of uncertainty, it is encouraging to see that the Government has acknowledged freelancers need for support during this period, as well as introducing a Coronavirus loan scheme of up to 1.2million to cover the cost of salaries and bills for small and medium sized businesses that may be impacted.
