The British Horse Society Trustee Elections 2020

A vibrant, well-qualified Board is vital to the success of The British Horse Society. Now is your chance to volunteer your professional and personal skills to lead and govern the BHS as a trustee. Alongside your fellow trustees, you would help to develop the BHS for the benefit of our members and the wider equestrian community.

Our trustees volunteer their time and experience to the BHS by attending and preparing for Board meetings and away days, supporting the executive team with good governance and representing the BHS at events and on committees.

We are looking to elect individuals with specialisms, which complement those of our existing trustees, and who can support and empower the executive team. Our priorities for the Trustee Election 2020 are: Safety, Volunteering and Business with Digital Knowledge.


Trustee Roles

Safety

You will assist the executive team in promoting the safety of horses and riders to a variety of equestrian and non-equestrian audiences. You will assist the team in identifying opportunities for engagement with other stakeholders and your knowledge of safety will provide an invaluable addition to the expertise already contained within the BHS Safety team. You will join the Safety Advisory Committee and you will also act as a scrutineer of health and safety governance to the Board.

Candidates should have some or all of the following specialised skills and experience:

  • Extensive knowledge of one or more of the key areas covered by BHS Safety (for example riding on the roads, dangerous dogs, cycling etc.)
  • A working knowledge of current safety standards and legislation within equestrianism
  • Experience of volunteering for the BHS as a Safety Officer or as a Ride Safe Assessor or Trainer
  • Professional experience working within the wider safety sector
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation and its application within the work place
  • Public relations or media experience
  • Experience of chairing meetings

Volunteering

Together with the Executive Team you will ensure that the BHS continues to deliver and develop varied opportunities for volunteering in all areas of the Society’s charitable work. You will support the ongoing development of the Society’s programme of activities which encourage participation in equestrianism, supporting and advising on new initiatives, audiences and funders that could be involved with our opportunities.

Candidates should have some or all of the following specialised skills and experience:

  • Experience of volunteering and volunteer management
  • Experience of leading volunteering expansion programmes
  • Knowledge of the voluntary sector which may include but not be limited to, how to engage volunteers and increase the active participation of
  • Knowledge of the sporting sector in relation to active participation in supporting equestrian competitions and activities
  • Experience of applying for and managing externally funded projects
  • Experience of project development and management of a large number of volunteers

Business with Digital Knowledge

As the Specialist Trustee for Business you will have a commercial background with Executive or Board level experience and knowledge to support the Senior Management Team in delivering the Strategic Plan for 2019-2024 and the projects that support it. The Society has robust systems in place to ensure the correct process for projects and programmes from inception through to completion. You will support the Senior Management Team in project and programme governance and provide a conduit to the Board.

Candidates should have some or all of the following specialised skills and experience:

Business:

  • Extensive experience of project and programme management
  • Experience of strategic and operational planning and monitoring in a national organisation
  • Excellent business management and development skills and knowledge
  • Experience of developing customer centric strategies using currently available technologies

Digital Technology:

  • An in depth understanding of the application of information technology, websites and digital platforms
  • Knowledge of digital membership platforms and their application in promoting member engagement
  • Experience of product management including member experience, community management, analytics and insights
  • Knowledge of current technology trends and an understanding of software practices, security and behaviours

Eligibility to stand

To be eligible for election you must be a person aged 18 years or older and have been a member of the Society for at least three years on Wednesday 15 July 2020, the date of the Election Board Meeting.

  • Close: 4pm on Monday 16 March 2020
