BHS Celebrates 70 Years of Bringing Horses and People Together

5 Nov 2017

The British Horse Society (BHS) is delighted to announce a special moment in the history of the charity –it’s turning 70 this November.

Founded in 1947, the BHS is now the largest equestrian charity in the UK with over 100,000 members. To mark this significant milestone, the BHS will celebrate all year long throughout the UK.

The theme of the Platinum celebrations is ‘I didn’t know the BHS did that…’ focusing on the broad scope of work that the BHS does in education, equestrian access, safety, welfare and participation. BHS volunteers and committees will be organising Platinum events throughout the year – including fun rides, special events and quiz nights. Find the full range of events and competitions here.

Martin Clunes, President of The British Horse Society, said: “70 years feels a very special moment in time, and I am thrilled to be President for the this remarkable anniversary. With our 100,000 members it’s just a fantastic time for the BHS. It’s a huge privilege to share my life with horses, so I’m proud of the BHS for giving people the chance to share their lives with horses for the past 70 years”.

During 70 years, the BHS has made a real impact on the lives of horses and horse owners with wide-ranging campaigns and initiatives: Dead or Dead Slow; Paths for Communities which opens and repairs bridleways; lobbying for fairer business rates for equestrian businesses; the BHS-initiated Ragwort Control Act; and health clinics for horses throughout the country.

Lynn Petersen, Chief Executive of The British Horse Society, said: “It is an incredible feeing to celebrate our Platinum Year. We’re looking forward to another 70 years of helping horses and those who care for them. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of our members and volunteers. Congratulations to us all!”
