Event Details

Understanding how the equine lower limb is structured and functions is fundamental to understanding performance, soundness and injury. Yet for many horse owners and riders, anatomy can feel like something that only exists in textbooks and diagrams.

This fascinating evening lecture and live dissection demonstration offers a unique opportunity to see beyond the surface and gain a deeper understanding of the structures that play such a vital role in your horse's movement and wellbeing.

Led by Anne Loach MSc, AdvCertVPhys, BSc (Hons), Lecturer in Equine Studies at Moulton College, the session will use a lower limb dissection to explore the anatomy of the horse in a practical and engaging way. Seeing the structures in situ provides a level of understanding that simply cannot be achieved through photographs or illustrations alone.

During the evening, Anne will guide attendees through the intricate network of bones, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissues that make up the lower limb, explaining how these structures work together to absorb concussion, provide stability and facilitate movement.

The lecture will also explore the challenges placed upon the lower limb during exercise and everyday activities, helping attendees better understand why certain injuries occur and how they can impact a horse's comfort, performance and long-term soundness.

Topics covered will include:

• Anatomy of the lower limb from the knee/hock downwards
• The function of bones, joints, tendons and ligaments
• How the lower limb supports movement and athletic performance
• Common sites of injury and why they are vulnerable
• The impact of injury on movement and soundness
• Current approaches to treatment, rehabilitation and management
• Practical applications for horse owners, riders and equine professionals

Whether you are a horse owner wanting to better understand your horse's health, a rider interested in improving performance, an equine professional looking to develop your knowledge, or a student seeking a deeper appreciation of equine anatomy, this event offers valuable insight that can be applied directly to your work with horses.

No prior anatomical knowledge is required, although those with existing experience will also benefit from the detailed explanations and opportunity to see structures first-hand.

This is a rare opportunity to learn from an experienced lecturer in a specialist laboratory environment and gain a unique perspective on one of the most important areas of the equine body.
