Summary of COVID-19 restrictions for equestrian activities - Scotland

The following information shows The British Horse Society and British Riding Clubs current interpretation of the most recent government guidance and is subject to change, as and when government advice is updated. Please bear with us while we make these changes.

The advice detailed below is applicable to SCOTLAND only.

Information on areas with additional restrictions can be found here and generally include no non-essential travel in or out of the area.

Under these circumstances, BHS and BRC activities would not be classed as essential travel. Some areas may also have travel restrictions within the area, so this must be checked on an area-by-area basis.

General guidance for how many can meet OUTDOORS for un-organised activities / socials

Up to six people from up to two households (under 12's not counted in limits) Cannot meet more than 4 other households a day.

General guidance for how many can meet INDOORS for un-organised activities / socials

In public places, up to six people from up to two households (under 12's not counted in limits) Cannot meet more than 4 other households a day. In private places / homes, no mixing with other households is permitted.

Social distance

2 metres

Group sizes for organised sporting activities (BHS & BRC activities)

Maximum capacity of 200 people where the activity is organised and supervised. Must be in a defined bubble. Groups cannot mix but multiple sessions can take place throughout the day. Can be a rolling number of 30.

Numbers permitted in warm-up arenas or rings

To be considered in the risk assessment and in-line with the numbers above.

Unlimited unless in a local lockdown area or the Central Belt of Scotland

Indoor, covered arenas & outdoor.

Lessons / clinics

Permitted for groups of up to 30 at one time with multiple sessions per day as long as groups do not mix. Maximum capacity of 200. No restriction on type of activity. 

Training & education activities

Up to 30 people per group if suitably risk assessed.

Organised hacks

Permitted for groups of up to 30 at one time. No restriction on type of activity. 

Fun rides

Permitted for groups of up to 30 at one time. No limit on the total number in a day if set off in groups of less than 30.

Day camps

Permitted for groups of up to 30 at one time. No restriction on type of activity. Maximum capacity of 200.

Residential camps

Permitted for groups of up to 30 at one time. Accommodation permitted for a maximum of six people from two households in one facility.

Social / evening activities at camp

Permitted but restricted to groups of six from up to two households outdoors or in a public place (under 12's not counted in limits) 

Competitions

Competition bubbles of up to 30 people to ensure the smooth running of the event. These bubbles must not mix. Maximum capacity of 200.

On-line competitions

Permitted. No restriction on type of activity.

Social & fundraising activities

Permitted but restricted to groups of six from up to two households (under 12's not counted in limits) 

Unmounted competitive, training or education activities

Permitted for groups of up to 30 at one time. Maximum capacity of 200.

Committee meetings / AGMs

Should only be held virtually at this time.

All other BHS & BRC activities

Permitted as long as social distancing can be maintained, in-line with above numbers.
