A bit about me...

"Hello, I have had a great passion for horses since my early memories. My first horse was made of metal, suspended on four springs it was a grey with a red saddle. Needless to say in the 1970’s health and safety was virtually none existent. I started to have lessons at the age of 7 but also if any friends needed help or I could beg a ride, there I was with my rubber riding boots and my ill fitting hat. It was only when I reached the age of 20 I managed to buy my first horse. What a mine field that turned out to be. They never looked like the description in the farmer’s guardian, no internet those days you had to rely on honesty.

I finally plumped for Sky, a 15.3hh thoroughbred. Well let me tell you, he taught me a whole new skill, how to sit to a spook. That is where my true learning began. After spending many years, spinning, spooking and jogging I found my love of the good old fashioned Irish draught horse. I’m currently on my second, he’s a big grey standing around 18hh. He’s not been truly measured, that’s something I put off. Hacking is my favourite time spent with my horse but I have recently been met with some animosity against this lovely creature. I can only imagine that the people who are currently complaining have retired and are spending more time at home, therefore are seeing riders out during the day where they would have been in work.

In my area, we only have one small stretch of bridleway with nothing else carrying any authority for horses to use. This is why I made a choice to get onboard with the BHS to try and implement some rights of way, even if it doesn’t benefit myself, it will provide safe access for future equestrians. I’m hoping to make a difference even if it’s small. Volunteering is important to me and to you. If I gave you a stick and asked you to snap it in half, you could easily do that couldn’t you? But if I gave you a bunch of sticks, it would be very hard to break them. Strength in numbers. Horses are graceful, athletic & stoic.
