Sarah Spencer-Williams
Based near Monmouth, South Wales
Passed Fellowship – October 2024

Sarah grew up in West Wales and was an active member of Llandovery Pony Club, ultimately achieving the Pony Club A Test. Her passion for eventing began there, and at 16 she became a working pupil at Waterstock, taking with her a very green horse, who she went on to contest at Young Rider level.

After achieving her BHSAI, Sarah worked full-time at a BHS Riding School near Abergavenny while producing horses for eventing, mainly off the track. She went on to achieve her BHSII before returning to West Wales to run her own yard, focusing on breaking, schooling, and coaching. In 1993, she passed her BHSI and became a BHS assessor.

In 1994, Sarah joined Usk College to lead and develop its Equine Centre into a BHS training and assessment centre, becoming the first one in Wales to run up to Stage 4. Alongside this, she continued to event successfully, including winning the Welsh Championships and producing horses to Advanced level.

Sarah became a BE-accredited coach in 2006 and later a BE Under-18 Regional Coach for Wales. She is now a senior BHS assessor and IQA, approvals inspector, and has held various roles on the APCED (formerly Q&T) committee.

Her international coaching and assessment experience includes work in the USA, Ireland, Italy, China, and Hong Kong. She is passionate about supporting both competitive and career riders and believes strongly that high-quality equestrian education is key to equine welfare.

Committed to making coaching and qualifications accessible, Sarah continues to support a wide range of learners, from those working at the higher levels, to those with no previous experience. She is always looking for opportunities to bring people into the BHS system, to train and support them through qualifications. In her new role as BHS Education Trustee, she looks forward to contributing to the future of inclusive, horse-centred education.
