We are delighted to announce that the BHS National Riding School Championships are taking place on Wednesday 13 April 2022 at Onley Grounds Equestrian Complex, Willoughby, Rugby, Warwickshire, CV23 8AJ

The competition is open to BHS Approved Riding Centres and all competitors must be non-horse owners competing on horses and ponies on a Riding School License. Whatever your age or ability come and take part and show us your skills in equitation, jumping and stable management.

We are delighted to say that the competition is once again sponsored by Champion, makers of quality riding hats and body protectors.

General Information

In classes 1, 2 and 3 there are three phases with a collective overall score deciding the winners. The first phase is the equitation test, usually followed by the stable management section, and the last phase is the showjumping section. Classes 4 and 5 are equitation only.

Prizes for all Classes

At the Championships there will be rosettes to 10th place and a sash to the winner in all classes. Commemorative rosettes will be issued to all competitors and there will be spot prizes throughout the day. Coach and Proprietor recognition awards will be given to the Coach/Proprietor of the winning rider.

Results

Best Effort - This award is kindly donated by Emmeline Hannelly from the BHS Welfare Department, in memory of her horse Jonty.

Benji Hughes from Cottage Farm Stables. Proprietor Jane Perry, and coach Loni Perry had this to say

'Benji has ridden with us since he was six years old and is desperate to be old enough to become a volunteer, while he waits for that day to come he always makes sure he turns up early for his lesson so that he can go and check and care for all of the horses. Once he has "done his rounds" he then proceeds to check that all the other horses in his group are groomed and tacked up ready before his own and then will quietly wait till  last to mount- just in case someone isn't happy with their horse and will swap with them, even if  this puts him out of his comfort zone .  He is a pleasure to have around the yard, always striving to be positive and helpful and his genuine love of the horse shines through. Benji is a real asset on show days, displaying all his normal traits whilst bringing the team together and supporting his fellow competitors, and installing confidence in all. This said you may think that all aspects of riding have come  easily to him but this is not the case, he has really struggled with his jumping and has spent several years  persevering with training and overcoming his own doubts and fears until he now has the confidence and ability to qualify for class 1, and we couldn't be happier for him! Even during lockdown he kept in constant contact always checking how the horses were and if they needed anything, and we were often greeted with sacks of carrots and apples outside the gates. When asked to sum Benji up there was one phrase, "He is a true Gentleman.'
