Riding Jump

Working through this series of challenge awards will introduce you to jumping and riding in a light seat position.

The awards

Your coach will guide you through the process of developing your jumping skills, from riding over poles to jumping a small course of fences in balance and harmony. Learning to jump will add more variation to your riding and help to improve your fitness, balance and confidence.

Bronze Award

The Bronze award prepares you to learn to jump by introducing you to riding in a light seat and riding over ground poles.

You will learn to:

  • Establish a light seat position 
  • Negotiate various figures and exercises in a light seat 
  • Work over ground poles in preparation for jumping

Silver Award

The Silver award continues to develop your light seat position as you begin to jump over small fences and work towards riding a course of fences.

You will learn to:

  • Ride over a course of ground poles in trot

  • Ride over single ground poles in canter

  • Develop the correct jumping position

  • Jump small, single fences

  • Have a positive influence on your horse when jumping

Gold Award

The Gold award introduces you to riding a course of fences and continues to focus on improving your technique over different types of fences.

You will learn to:

  • Establish your balance, technique and co-ordination over fences

  • Jump different types of fences

  • Progress to grid work

  • Ride a course of fences

Platinum Award

The Platinum award further builds on your ability to ride more complex courses and jumping exercises.

By completing this award, you will:

  • Be introduced to doubles and related distances

  • Learn how to walk distances between linked fences

  • Use gridwork to develop your jumping position and stability

  • Jump a course that includes a double and related distance

How to get involved

Challenge awards are open to anyone who would like to improve their horse knowledge or skills; you do not have to be a BHS member to take part.

If you have your own horse

Courses are delivered by an Accredited Professional Coach. Your coach can come to your livery yard or British Riding Club grounds. 

Find a BHS Accredited Professional

If you do not own your own horse

Or you’re not sure if they would be suitable, don’t worry. There are BHS Approved Riding Centres throughout the UK that deliver challenge awards with their facilities and horses.  

You can achieve the challenge awards at your local Approved Centre where they will match you to a horse to ensure your lessons are suitable to your experience.
