Through Wild Eyes: Meeting The Horses At The Highland Wildlife Park
Friday 16 May 2025, 10am-3.30pm
Highland Wildlife Park, Kincraig, Kingussie, PH21 1NL
Join us for a unique and inspiring day dedicated to the world of wild equids, with a special focus on the rare and beautiful Mongolian Wild Horses, known as Takhi. This experience offers a rare opportunity to spend time immersed in the lives of these extraordinary animals, learning not only about the Takhi living at the Highland Wildlife Park but also about their wild relatives roaming free on the vast Mongolian steppe.
Throughout the day, we’ll explore the fascinating world of wild equids – from the Takhi of Mongolia to their cousins like the Asiatic wild ass (Khulan) and other species who continue to survive in some of the most challenging and remote environments on earth. These ancient and resilient animals hold vital ecological roles in the landscapes they inhabit, and their stories offer valuable insights into wildness, adaptation, and survival.
The day will combine relaxed talks, guided tours, and personal insights from those who work closely with these animals. You'll meet the dedicated team at the Highland Wildlife Park who care for the resident Takhi herd and learn about the species-specific care they provide. Equine podiatrist and BHS Welfare Advisor Bonny Mealand will share her first-hand experiences working with the Park’s Takhi, including the gentle, low-stress handling techniques she has introduced to support their wellbeing and ensure that any necessary interventions are as calm and positive as possible.
Bonny will also take you on a journey to Mongolia itself, sharing stories and reflections from her recent field trip to the Great Gobi B Strictly Protected Area. In collaboration with the International Takhi Group, she spent time living and learning alongside those who dedicate their lives to protecting the world’s only true wild horse. You'll hear about the challenges these animals face in the wild, the remarkable efforts that brought them back from the brink of extinction, and how the Takhi are now reclaiming their place in the ecosystem they evolved to belong to.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Cairngorms National Park, this is more than just a day out – it’s an opportunity to deepen your understanding of wild equids, support vital conservation work, and connect with others who share your passion for these incredible animals. A percentage of the proceeds from the day will go directly towards supporting the Takhi living wild in Mongolia, helping to ensure that their future remains as free and wild as their past.
Whether you’re an equine enthusiast, a conservation supporter, or simply someone who feels the pull of wild places and wild hearts, we would love for you to join us on this unforgettable day.
