South West Riders was formed in 2001 to raise the profile of horse-riding and to inform and influence Devon County Council (DCC) policy. This includes the multi-use of all tracks, the improvement of the fragmented network of bridleways, and the issue of lack of safe crossing points on busy roads.
To this end, we have lobbied local MPs and ministers, DCC and other agencies such as the Forestry Commission. We are active in both Devon and Cornwall, with a Cornwall branch. We have a good working relationship with DCC Public Rights of Way and Highways Departments and regularly have meetings about the provision of recreational routes, and the upkeep of existing routes.
Our greatest successes have been achieved in co-operation with DCC; the opening of the Pegasus Way - a multi-use track along an old railway line. DCC have adopted the premise that all new tracks will be multi-use where possible.
