The BHS South West Region were very grateful to receive a legacy from the late Robert Sullivan-Tailyour, former South West Regional Chairman. As a long standing volunteer himself, Robert was always very passionate and supportive of the work that volunteers undertook on behalf of the BHS at a local level. In recognition of this it was decided by the BHS Regional committee that some of Robert's legacy would be used to purchase a perpetual award for each BHS county committee to present to their own Volunteer of the Year which would be voted for by the committee.
The first recipient of the Robert Sullivan-Tailyour Volunteer of the Year award for BHS Somerset was Charlotte (Charlie) Usher. Charlie is an Education Officer for Somerset and she has organised numerous events within the county for people to take part in. From lecture demonstrations to summer camps, Charlie donates a huge amount of her time and wonderful organisational skills to ensure that more people become better educated in riding and caring for horses in the county.
In 2015 Charlie was the first recipient of The British Horse Society's national Volunteer of the Year Award which was presented to her at our November Awards Ceremony in London and it is a testament to her continuing hard work and enthusiasm in her volunteer role that she has now been voted for by her peers.
BHS Somerset Chairman, Gill Longhurst presented Charlie with her award at their Christmas meal.
