Access Week Pleasure Ride on Sunday 31 May 2015. Report by Organiser Lois Eyre
Huge thanks to all those who helped with this – Denise who was Show Secretary, as well as First Aider (fortunately the latter not needed); Julie for the loan of number bibs and BHS direction signs, preparing number bib deposit envelopes, and advice; Hilary (with Rory) and Sue R who between them marshalled 4 of the more awkward gates (leaving just one difficult gate, on a downhill slope, unmarshalled); Hilary also bullock-shooed! Jackie & Viv who escorted the one rider who booked to join a group, and also took down the orange dangle route markers that Lakin and I had spent 3 damp hours on Friday putting up; Jan who provided the orange tape for the dangles; Sam who ordered souvenir rosettes, and did our Facebook posting; Emma who put together the lovely poster; and everyone who circulated the info/Fb posts further.
By the Saturday evening, it seemed there were up to 30 riders possibly coming, as well as Gemma (from Pershore) who had pre-booked for the escorted ride.
Alas, the weather forecast was fairly dire, though by Sunday morning, had improved; and whilst we hoped the rain would clear to drizzle and then dry, it looked likely that some would be deterred from coming.
18 riders came for the morning ride, including from Tewkesbury, Minety (Wilts), Bristol, and two with no transport who hacked up from Brookthorpe.
All came back safely, though one was spooked off (but remounted and continued) and one very experienced rider retired with an attack of vertigo. One pair got a little lost at one point, but retraced their steps and then picked up the correct route.
Although it was a relatively short route, of about 10 kms, with two opportunities for several fields of canter, it wasn’t overall a fast route, and most riders took about 2 hours to complete.
Just about everyone came back enthusing over what a lovely ride they’d had, expressing thanks to all who were involved in the running, many were delighted to receive a souvenir rosette, and a lot asked when the next Ride would be!
“Just wanted to thank you so much for the Cranham ride today - varied terrain, well marked and such friendly, helpful people! With the hack there and back from Brookthorpe, the ride was almost 20 miles and nearly 6 hours in the saddle but it was worth it!
Thanks again, Tina & Julie x “
“Thank you for organising the ride at Cranhan. We throughly enjoyed the ride, the scenery & route were fantastic, as well as the warm welcome from you & your helpers. We would love to come on the next one? Peter & Julia”
“Just a big thank you to all the volunteers who organised the BHS access ride yesterday through the Cotswolds Commons and Beechwoods National Nature Reserve. It was a lovely ride and all the volunteers who were manning some of the gates were very helpful. It was just a shame that more riders did not enter…Thanks again for a great ride. Helen and Yvonne (from Bristol)”
“Can I just say a very big thank you for organizing the pleasure ride today. The weather at first was awful but cleared up as we left, to make the ride really lovely riding through the woods, we saw a deer who was quite happy just to spend a few minutes watching us.Can you also pass on our thanks to the volunteers who also helped.
Once again a big thank you for a lovely ride - Gerri & Emma”
