Whether you have been inspired by the great equestrian medal successes at the Rio Olympics, or are just looking for a new activity to enjoy with the family, absolutely everyone is invited to get closer to horses as part of national Give Horses a Go weekend on 17 - 18 September.
Give Horses a Go weekend is an initiative run by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) which sees riding centres, horse charities and equestrian events across the country offer everyone, no matter of age, gender or ability, the chance to get up close and personal with horses.
Many BHS approved equine establishments across the North West are getting involved in the action across the weekend, and here’s how!
Myerscough College, PR3 0RY
17th September - British Showjumping show starting at 9am.
18th Unaffiliated - Show Jumping starting at 9am.

Wrea Green Equitation Centre, PR4 3PP
Get involved in the action with free have a go sessions, adult or child, between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday 17 September. Take part in a round robin of events including practical lecture, pony instincts and reactions, how to meet the pony and how many things can you remember game, 15 lasting minutes each. Free raffle for a riding lesson, all entrance names in a hat, valued for 6 months. Your visit must be booked in advance by telephone or a yard visit. Minimum age 3 years. Maximum weight 13 stone. Only guide dogs permitted.
Peers Clough Farm, BB4 9NG
On Saturday 17 September, all ages and abilities are eligible to try:
a) a short hack round farm
b) a ride in the grass arena as appropriate
From 12.30pm - 3pm, view demonstrations by our Pony Pals group (age 7+) of their skills in horse care, stable management and riding. Or, from 10am - 12noon get involved and groom a horse! From 12.30pm - 3pm Peers Clough will be showcasing their locally bred Wellbrow Fell ponies.
Location: Directly on Pennine bridleway, accommodation available on site. Tea, coffee, cold drinks, cake etc available. *From Burnley Road East B6238 proceed up Peers Clough Road with care as some parts are bumpy. Go past first farm on left (Lower Laneside) and continue to where the road forks. Take the left fork (Peers Clough Farm B&B sign on gate). Follow the lane to the cream coloured farmhouse on the hill turning right at the sign to Peers Clough Farm. (Do not go over the cattle grid marked Peers Clough Cottage, this is a separate property). Parking to the rear. Not suitable for wheelchair users.
Knowsley Village Stables, L34 9ER
On Saturday 17 September, visit Knowsley Village stables between 3pm and 5pm to have a free taster ride around the field (5 mins each), try a free grooming sessions (will run constantly 3pm - 4:45pm) or meet the ponies (3pm - 5pm). Plus enjoy the tuck shop, cake sale, hot and cold drinks, chocolate, crisps and sweets! All lessons for new clients booked on the day will receive 50% off their first lesson if paid for on the day. Dogs on a lead welcome. Minimum age 4 years. Maximum weight 12 stone. The entrance to the yard is on Knowsley Lane.
Bold Heath Equestrian Centre, WA8 3XT
Visit Bold Heath and watch their Unaffiliated One Day Event for free! This comprises of Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping, so don’t miss this opportunity to watch the three Olympic disciplines!
Cheshire Riding School, CW9 6BS
Visit Cheshire Riding School between 1pm – 4pm on 17 September, or 10am – 3pm on 18 September for your chance to get involved! They will be offering free 20 minute taster sessions either in an arena or around our farm ride. Learn to stop/start and steer in a safe and fun environment. Open to all riders from 4 years of age. Viewing area for all arenas, café serving hot and cold food, vending machines. All facilities accessible to disabled visitors. All visitors to receive a 1/2 price lesson voucher for a follow up session. Registration to take place in reception 15 minutes before session. Pennant Park Equestrian Centre, CH8 9ER
Visit Pennant Park between 10am – 2pm on Sunday 18 September for free grooming sessions, free advice on getting into riding and a tour of the stables. Tea and Coffee free all day.
