Ride it, Record it, Restore it!

22 May 2015

The British Horse Society’s Access Week gets underway tomorrow (23-31 May) and will see horse riders and carriage drivers across the UK raising awareness about the importance of having safe off-road riding.
Mark Weston, Director of Access at The British Horse Society, said: “We are very much looking forward to celebrating the wonderful off-road riding that is available in the UK – but also to raise the profile of the need for much more safe, off-road access for equestrians.
“We hope that during this week riders and carriage drivers will join us in using the routes that are currently available to them and enjoy sharing the experience with their horse.”
There are many ways to get involved…
Share your ride!
The charity is asking riders and carriage drivers to share photos and details of where they are riding or carriage driving during Access Week by using #greatride on their social media streams.
Invest in the future!
This year BHS is asking equestrians to raise money for the new British Horse Society Paths for Communities Fund. This fund will help to provide multi-user routes in Scotland and Northern Ireland and bridleways and byways in England and Wales. The more donations they have, the wider the national equestrian network will grow. If you are aware of a new route that could be opened with the help of the Paths for Communities Fund, please contact the BHS on 02476 840467.
Protect your paths!
The Society is asking equestrians in England and Wales to check whether any routes that they ride are recorded on the definitive map and, if not, to investigate whether they should be. Routes not recorded on this map by the 2026 ‘cut-off date’, introduced by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, could be extinguished. It is vital that any such unrecorded bridleways or byways are recorded before 2026, or they could be lost forever.
