Lynn Petersen (Chief Executive)
Lynn’s career spans senior management positions in sales and marketing with commercial organisations such as TIME Magazine, Kraft General Foods and Burson Marsteller. As Director of Sales, Marketing and Fundraising for The Outward Bound Trust, Lynn worked closely with HRH Prince Andrew in transforming the charity with modern management strategies. In 2010, she travelled to Ethiopia for the Swiss charity Rainbows for Children where she became Head of the Nicolas Robinson primary school and is now on the Board of Governors.
Educated in the USA, Lynn has a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in City Planning. Lynn has dual nationality in both the UK and USA and is currently on the Board of Governors of two schools and on the Board of Trustees of four UK charities.
With her management expertise, the board has entrusted Lynn with the Society's commitment to grow in the service of horses and equestrians. "We have a distinguished past, and now we are determined to have a glorious future in our dedication to our members and our dedication to the horse."
Horses, dogs, long-distance walking, skiing, tennis, international travel, theatre, books, family and friends fulfill the personal passions in life.
Martin Clunes (President)
Actor, writer and horse owner Martin Clunes took over as President of The British Horse Society on 1 June 2011. Already known to millions from his stage and screen appearances, including Doc Martin, Reggie Perrin and Men Behaving Badly, his 2010 ITV documentary series Horsepower revealed his passion for horses.
Martin’s wife Philippa and daughter Emily are also keen riders and together the family keep 16 four-legged friends on their farm in Dorset. He enjoys nothing more than getting out for a ride on his favourite horse, a huge Hanoverian called Chester (pictured with him above).

Our Vice-Presidents play a valuable role in the presentation of The British Horse Society to the wider equestrian community. With each representing a different aspect of equestrianism, and with each bringing his or her own portfolio of understanding, skills and diplomacy, they help reinforce the message that we embrace every aspect and sector of the sport.
But there is another benefit to securing the public support of our Vice-Presidents. It should go without saying that the interests of all those within the sport, at whatever level and in whatever discipline, are best served when all the equestrian organisations work together constructively in a spirit of good will. Trustees are therefore committed to ensuring that The British Horse Society should forever be part of the unifying, co-operative and collegiate influence prevalent within the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) and further afield.
With a view to strengthening and giving a degree of permanence to this co-operation Trustees have invited the Chairmen of the BEF Board, the BEF Council, British Dressage, British Eventing, British Showjumping, The Pony Club and the Riding for the Disabled Association to become Vice-Presidents of the BHS, holding that office for the duration of their chairmanship. They join other Vice-Presidents who hold the office in their own right.
Although the office of Vice-President carries no specific responsibilities or obligations except for those which the office-holder chooses to undertake, Trustees hope and believe that alliances will be created between the BHS and the other organisations that will be beneficial to the equestrian community as a whole.
Chief Executive's Department
The Chief Executive's office provides direction, support and advice to all those – staff and volunteers – who deliver The British Horse Society’s objectives, ensuring that all aspects of the our work adhere to the principles of regularity and propriety, and are characterised by efficiency, effectiveness and economy. We also manage the programmes and deliver the outcomes set out by Trustees in the Society’s Corporate Plan.
The department organises the Society's presence at the Royal International Horse Show (the official horse show of the BHS), and at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, as well as organising the Society's annual awards ceremony and a number of other events.
Our Development Officers support members and volunteers in their regions, providing information, training and competitive events and the professional image of the BHS at a range of events.
They are the vital link between BHS headquarters and our members - in fact, as our front-line recruiting team, they are often our first link with potential members. They also ensure that development in the main areas of BHS work – Welfare, Access, Safety and Training – is deployed in the best way to each individual region.
Development Officers assist BHS headquarters with providing information and training to members, and mean regions communicate with each other effectively. They also support and advise their volunteers, without whom the Society could not operate.
