The Service

This free service is available to all BHS Friends, Gold (Adult, Junior, Student, Family), Life and Founder members for all your legal queries and is available by phone or email.

You will find the telephone number on the back of your membership card, or if you are a new member, in your welcome pack.

If you need to access the telephone number, email address or need your membership number before you utilise the service then please contact the friendly membership team on  02476 840506.

The free legal advice operates 7 days a week, with an answer phone message leaving service during busy periods or out of hours. You will receive call backs within 24 hours (Monday to Friday office hours).

You can access thirty minutes of free legal advice on each legal matter that you have, they can be equestrian or non-equestrian issues.

The helpline is always operated by solicitors with specialist expertise in equestrian matters.

We are pleased that the BHS Legal Helpline is operated by Harrison Clark Rickerbys, who have a dedicated equine legal team with expertise in the law relating to all equestrian issues.

So whether you are looking to buy, sell, loan or compete a horse or pony; are in dispute with someone regarding a horse related issue; set up or run an equestrian business; set up a syndicate or training arrangement; or need advice on the occupation of property, wills, trust, inheritance tax, employment or relationship difficulties where equestrian assets are involved, Harrison Clark Rickerbys has an expert able to help.

Meet the Team

Harrison Clark Rickerbys’ specialist equine team is made up of knowledgeable and experienced individuals. The equine team offers expert legal advice coupled with a real passion and understanding of practical issues that are important to their equine clients.


Ruth Coupe heads the team. She is an equine litigation specialist and advise on liabilities related to horses, sale and purchase disputes as well as negligence claims against veterinary professionals and other equine industry workers. Ruth’s passion for equine law stems from years of owning, breeding and competing horses. She has competed at National and 3* International level as a para-dressage rider and a previous rider on the UK Sport World Class Development squad.

Esther Stirling has recently joined the team as a partner in the litigation department. She is a Fellow of the Agricultural Law Association. Esther has over 10 years of litigation experience and long-standing expertise of handling disputes involving the ownership and use of horses. Esther has particular expertise in handling property litigation matters and professional negligence claims.

The other members of the team have similarly interesting backgrounds with horses which make them perfectly placed to act in the best interests of our equine clients.


Rachael Reeves advises on equine business matters and, as a horse owner and rider, combines her specialism in corporate law and passion for horses. Rachael can advise on setting up new equine business ventures, purchasing an equine business, structuring existing equine businesses and selling an equine business as well as advising on putting in place agreements and contracts such as livery, stud and training agreements, ownership agreements and loan agreements. For those who want to start a business, we offer a variety of fixed-cost start-up business packages, including incorporating a business and drafting key documents.

Rachel Reeves 


Also advising the business services clients, Rachel Nolloth assists with all employment-related matters, from apprenticeships, casual workers and drafting employment contracts to robustly defending tribunal claims and advising on severance arrangements. A keen horse-rider herself, Rachel understands the priorities of those working in the equine industry and tailors her advice accordingly. On hand whenever required, Rachel can work as and when needed and, once engaged, becomes a valuable asset to any growing equine business.
