This is the last date in a series of four equine healthcare talks for the BHS by Alex Clarke BVSc CertAVP MRCVS of The Island Equine Veterinary Practice.
Open to everyone with an interest in equine health and wellbeing, this series of talks has been put together by the BHS Isle of Wight to give equine enthusiasts a greater knowledge and the latest veterinary-based information on a variety of topics that have large implications on the welfare of horses and ponies, from leisure horses and retired companion animals to competition animals. Alex Clarke has spent his lifetime with horses and, since qualifying as a vet in 2006, has spent his entire career in 100% equine practice.

Assessing weight and condition; short and long term health implications of being under or over weight; how to help horses lose or gain weight.
- Thursday 10 July 2014 - No foot, no horse
Hoof and lower limb care through the year; to shoe or not to shoe; common hoof problems, their causes and cures; common lower limb lameness issues.
- Thursday 9 October 2014 - Care of older horses and equine OAPs
Feeding older horses; exercise v retirement for OAPs; common ailments afflicting horses as they age; the end of the road – knowing when the time is right for euthanasia, and the options available to owners when that time comes.
- Thursday 8 January 2015 - Equine teeth and dentistry
Routine care of the horse’s teeth; common problems, their causes and cures; the effects of a sore mouth on the horse at rest and under saddle.
Each evening is at 7.30pm for 8pm start, at The Eight Bells, Carisbrooke High St, PO30 1NR. Drinks can be purchased at the bar, and meals are available before the talks start.
