BHS Stage 1 is the first level on the BHS career ladder and will also aid horse owners in caring for and riding their own horses. This short course will cover the BHS Stage 1 syllabus and will provide you with the necessary preparation to achieve the qualfication.
Topics will include grooming, handling, shoeing, horse health, basic equine behaviour and riding on the flat.
The course will be delivered at Bridgwater College's fully equipped equestrian centre. Students will have access to a range of horses that are suitable for all abilities for the practical riding elements. Teaching will be done by our BHS qualified instructors who are experienced in preparing students for BHS qualifications.

The exam is not offered at the Cannington Centre and will be the individual's responsibility to enter the exam directly via the BHS.
You will need to pass a basic riding assessment consisting of mounting and dismount, walk, trot, canter in balance and show a light seat in troto and canter.
Please note ther is a 13 stone weight limit and you will have to provide your own riding equipment e.g. hat, gloves, riding clothes, whip and riding boots.
Day and time: Tuesday evening from 6pm - 8pm
Duration of course: 10 weeks
Cost: £210 for complete course. £110 for riding only. £100 for Horse Knowledge and Care only.
