Grass sickness is a devastating equine disease. Prevalent throughout the British Isles, it's fatal in both its acute and subacute forms and extremely distressing. Along with the Equine Grass Sickness Fund and the Animal Health Trust, The British Horse Society is supporting pilot tests of a new vaccine which could eradicate this condition forever, but we need your help to raise money for a full clinical trial.
The Fabulous Five's EGS Awareness Rides
These rides are to commemorate the lives lost to EGS and celebrate the survivors. The idea to organise a series of rides all taking place during two weekends in May 2014 came from a group of people who had all been directly affected by this devastating disease and hatched the plan through their Facebook page.
The ride taking place in Derbyshire is as a result of the BHS and the Fabulous Five's EGS Awareness Ride joining forces to raise as much as possible for the fund. Many people are giving up their time and given sponsorship to make this happen and your support will help. Everything you give will go to the EGS fund!
Start at the Coloured Cob Equestrian Centre in Creswell, Derbyshire (S80 4AA) for both the long route of approximately 14 miles and short route of approximately six miles. Start at the same point but go in different directions. Both routes take you through woodland and private land with a mixture of bridleways, permissive routes and private tracks.
The long route will take you through the spectacular archaeological limestone gorge and caves of Creswell Crags on the border between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
There are three road crossings – however there will be two stewards at each, visibility on all is excellent, and warning signs for road users will be in position.
Riders and groups will start off at approximately 10-minute intervals. If you are in a group please make this clear at the start and on your booking form.
Part of the route does have two-way traffic. Please respect other route users – walk when passing pedestrians or slower riders.
Rosette for every rider compliments of the BHS Derbyshire County Committee.
This is a fee paying ride, so sponsorship is entirely optional. If you would like to find sponsors as well that would be brilliant! Please just download a sponsorship form – and as a thank you we have some great prizes donated by Dengie, Verdo Horse Bedding and Day, Son & Hewitt for those collecting the most sponsorship money. Remember, everything you give will go to the EGS fund!
Booked in advance: adults - £10; under 16's - £5
