Equine Tourism Riding Holiday Centre Manager

By completing our equestrian tourism exams you will be able to show your level of competence in the equestrian tourism industry.  Employers can be assured that you are competent at the level you are qualified to and your clients will know that with you they are in safe hands.

Working in close collaboration with The Trekking and Riding Society of Scotland, The Association of Irish Riding Establishments and The Welsh Trekking and Riding Association, we have created progressive vocational qualifications specifically for those in the equestrian tourism industry. The qualifications particularly benefit those who escort treks, trail rides and hacks. These qualifications provide industry related, recognised standards of competence.

Riding Holiday Centre Manager Certificate

This certificate proves that you are a competent manager or owner, with knowledge of both practical and financial aspects of running an equestrian centre.

Entry requirements

You must be 22 years or over, hold your Ride Leader Level 3 Certificate and current Health and Safety First Aid at Work Certificate, BHS First Aid Certificate or appropriate National equivalent and BHS Riding and Road Safety Certificate.

It may be possible to gain entry to this exam without holding the Ride Leader Level 3 Certificate via recognition of your prior experiential learning.  For more information please refer to our Direct Entry Guidance or contact the Education Department on 02476 840508 or email education@bhs.org.uk.

As part of your exam you will be required to give a ten-minute presentation on a business topic and demonstrate sound business knowledge of running a commercial centre.  A candidate may not take this exam in their own centre or one where they work.

Become an Equestrian Tourism Examiner

You must already hold your Riding Holiday Centre Manager’s certificate to become an ETQ examiner. If you have this certificate and are interested in joining the Examiners team, please email Chris Doran at c.doran@bhs.org.uk or call 02476 840494.

We hope that riders will stay safe riding out, but unfortunately accidents happen. Every year, a high number of equestrian incidents go unrecorded. Our dedicated site, horseaccidents.org.uk, is a valuable resource providing a way that we can record incidents and gather statistics. Without hard evidence like this, it is impossible to lobby those in power to make the changes to ensure riding is safer for all.

Please take any opportunity you may have to talk to clients or candidates about the existence of the website and why their report is so valuable. Sharing experiences could make a huge difference – together we can fight for change.
