Who is this qualification for, and what is needed to enter it?
- The ITT is suitable for those aged 19 years or over.
- To enter the exam you will need to have passed the BHS PTT and completed the coaching portfolio.
- You will be required to hold a current First Aid Certificate (either First Aid at Work or The BHS First Aid Certificate).
- The exam consists of four practical coaching sessions; one group (either flat or jump), a lunge lesson, a private dressage lesson and a private jump lesson (show jumping or simulated cross country).
- Candidates will be required to deliver a pre-prepared presentation and answer questions in relation to the principles of equitation and equine business management.
Why should you do the BHS ITT?
The achievement of this qualification requires commitment and dedication to your own personal knowledge and coaching skills. The BHS ITT is a component of the BHS Intermediate Instructor Certificate. This qualification provides the skills to enable you to progress to a senior or management position within the industry.
What will a person with their BHS ITT be able to do in a professional environment?
A person who holds their BHS ITT will be able to give safe and competent lessons from beginner to elementary standards without supervision. They will be able to show genuine improvement of horse and rider. They will have sound, practical business knowledge and be conversant with running a commercial yard.
How do you train for the BHS ITT?
In order to take this exam you will need to have coached more experienced riders and riders that are currently competing. BHS Approved Training Centres may have training days specifically designed to prepare you for your ITT exam. You can arrange a coaching session at a BHS Approved Training Centre, or ask a Registered Instructor to observe and feedback to you whilst teaching your own clients.

When you have taken the BHS ITT, what is the next step?
If you have not yet achieved your BHS Stage Four, this would be your next step to achieve the BHS Intermediate Instructor Certificate. On achieving the ITT you will also be eligible to enter the BHS Senior Coach exam.
If you are unsuccessful in any section of your exam, you will not be required to retake the whole exam, you will retake the specific unit(s) only.
What if you took the ITT before 2013 and still need to resit units?
If you have already taken the BHS Intermediate Teaching Test pre-2013 and need to resit one or more sections to complete the qualification, you will still be able to sit these. We will gradually reduce the number of pre-2013 resit dates, so you are encouraged to complete any outstanding sections as soon as possible. Important Booking Information: please be aware exams close two weeks prior to the exam date. Entry will close at 5pm on the night before this 14 day period begins, i.e. if the exam you would like to book for is on the 20th of any given month, you must be booked on by 5pm on the 5th.
If your exam is on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, entry will close at 3pm on the Friday before the 14 day period begins.
