Becoming an Assessor or Judge

Assessor

Any current member wishing to become a BRC Assessor must attend an assessment day (see above) and must already hold at least one of the following:

  • Horse Welfare 3
  • BRC Riding (Equitation) 3
  • BHS Stage 3
  • Pony Club B test

Because there is no formal training to become an Assessor, it is recommended that candidates attend assessments with a qualified Assessor at Level 3 or above to observe.

Junior Assessors

Those assessors who are BRC Riding Assessors are eligible to assess Junior Riding and Horse Welfare. Assessors must meet the criteria regarding First Aid courses and Duty of Care course to be able to assess Junior members. They must also attend regular refresher days (see above).

Master Judge

Any current member wishing to become a Master Judge for the Riding Clubs Panel must attend an assessment day (see above), and must already hold the following qualifications:

  • List 1 Riding Test Judge

  • List 1 Style Jumping Judge

  • Horse Welfare 4 or BHSI/SM

  • BRC Riding 4/Equitation 4 or BHSAI, Pony Club B test, BHS Stage 4 Riding

Once these qualifications have been achieved, candidates must attend an assessment day with a Master Judge from outside their area. Once the master judge has given their approval, the training committee will discuss and approve the new master judge at their next meeting. There is an annual workshop for master judges, when improvements to the training system can be discussed.
