Equipment list for BHS TREC Competitions
The following equipment is required for all competitors in all phases and all levels of competition:
- Hard Hat complying with current standards (ASTM F1163, PAS 015, BSEN 1384, SNELL E2001, all should carry the BSi KITE mark and/or the American equivalent, the SEI mark. EN 1384 is also acceptable providing it has a CE mark attached to the hat).
- Personal ID – minimum requirement is rider name, rider number and emergency telephone number.
- ID on the horse – minimum requirement is rider number and emergency telephone number.
- Safe and appropriate clothing and footwear*
- For POR phase only – fluorescent/reflective hi-viz clothing. The minimum requirement is clearly visible fluorescent strips (or garment) on the rider’s torso. It is strongly recommended that this is also reflective, and is supplemented by a fluorescent/reflective hatband and fluorescent/reflective hi viz on the horse.
POR Recommended Equipment (Penalties will be incurred for missing items)
- Compass
- Pens (map marking, ideally two colours with thin nibs)
- Torch (light weight)
- First aid kit equipment both equine and human
- Waterproofs
- Whistle (to be carried on rider)
- Head collar and lead rope or combination bridle
- Emergency farriers tools and equi-boot or similar (only compulsory in Level 3 & above
- Pairs competitors must have all the compulsory items between them unless advised otherwise. However, they must each have hard hat, fluorescent clothing, waterproofs, head collar/rope and a whistle and are encouraged to carry the full list if possible.
Useful POR equipment:
- A map case
- Saddle bags
- Coins and/or mobile phone for emergency phone call.
- Telephone numbers to call (supplied by organiser)
- Drink and snack for the rider
- Digital watch or stopwatch.
Note* For this competition, experience has shown that footwear with a tread sole and ½ chaps are more suitable than the conventional Riding Boot – bearing in mind that a lot of the time can be spent dismounted leading your horse over rough terrain up and down hills. Footwear without a clear heel, such as running shoes (similar to those worn by people orienteering on foot and Endurance riders) may be used during the POR phases but must be used with a suitable stirrup with cage.
