BHS Horses and Ponies
Equine welfare has always been at the heart of The British Horse Society. In 1997, the BHS opened its first dedicated rescue centre in Warwickshire, which provided facilities for rescued horses and ponies that had suffered neglect or cruelty to enable them to receive expert care and rehabilitation.
Unfortunately in 2003 the BHS closed its National Rescue Centre, and the BHS now concentrates its welfare activities on preventing horses from becoming welfare cases. We take the view that any horse that ends up needing to be rescued and rehabilitated is a failure on our part – all of our activities are focused on providing support, help and education to enable owners to care for their horses and ponies adequately. Rescue centres and sanctuaries are always under enormous pressure to take in more animals, and so we prefer to attempt to nip the problem in the bud rather than wait to pick up the pieces when it is too late.
One of our major initiatives to stem the flow of horses into rescue centres is the newly launched ‘Think Before You Breed’ Campaign. We believe that reducing the number of low quality animals bred will lead to a reduction in the number being admitted into sanctuaries when things go wrong.
The BHS does, however, have a number of rescued horses and ponies who are out on loan to carers all over the country. All of our horses have their own stories that you can read about in these pages.
The BHS never sells any of its horses and we keep a close eye on each and every one of them. From time to time our animals might need a new home so if you are looking for a new horse be sure to keep an eye on the website to see if any of ours are available.
