'Learning Theory And Shaping Behaviour To Improve The Wellbeing And Training Of The Horse' With Angelo Telatin FBHS

A Toolkit For Empowering The Equestrian

Monday 8 January 2024, 9.30am-4pm

Equine Centre, Kirkely Hall, Northumberland NE20 0BB.

We are delighted to host a day with Angelo Telatin FBHS as part of his UK-wide tour with The British Horse Society.

Angelo Telatin is a Professor at Delaware Valley University Equine Science and Management program, is a British Horse Society Fellow and a PhD in Equine Behaviour and Training. His research focus is in Comparison between Equine Training Techniques and the Psychology of Learning. This unique life experience allowed him to fuse the academic discoveries in animal learning with the empirical knowledge of horse training techniques, bringing about a homogeneous and effective training protocol.

Theory without practice useless, practice without theory, senseless.

This course is aimed at equestrians of all levels whether you are a rider, trainer, coach, owner or just have an interest in the wellbeing and training of a horse. The content of the day will include:

  • Using learning theory to shape behaviour, including pressure and release and positive and negative reinforcement
  • Application of learning theory in hand (dealing with issues such as needle shy, spray shy, difficult to worm, loading and mounting, etc)
  • Application of learning theory in the ridden horse, both on the flat and over fences (tension in new environments, spooking, etc)
  • Developing positive partnerships in the horse human relationship from grassroots to professional.
