Event details

The day is for anyone looking to improve their depth of horse knowledge. It is specifically aimed for those looking at or studying for BHS Stage 4 or Stage 5 or Pony Club A/AH exams. It is open to coaches, trainers, students and horse owner/riders. It is also suitable for Coaches who are preparing candidates for assessment as well as Coaches looking to further their work with groups and individual riders.

The day is planned to be informative and interactive with plenty of opportunity discuss what we observe. It will be presented by Jo Winfield FBHS, who has a wealth of knowledge on equine fitness and management as well as being an assessor who knows the Stage 4 and 5 syllabi inside out and can relate the information to the assessments.

AM The morning will be spent at Oliver Sherwood's Neardown Stables racing yard. Oliver Sherwood is a leading National Hunt trainer, having sent out the winners of many top races, including the 2015 Grand National (Many Clouds). We'll meet at his purpose-built yard for coffee and an introduction to the day at 08.30, before heading up on to the gallops to watch the second lot work. This will be followed by a yard tour, looking at the facilities, horse management and procedures. We'll look at some individual horses stood and trotted up, speak to the trainer and, depending on availability, other key members of the team such as the farrier, physio or vet.

PM After a lunch break, we'll reconvene at Oaksey House, the Injured Jockeys Fund's (IJF) Lambourn rehabilitation and fitness centre. The IJF provides specialist rehabilitation treatment for physical and neurological injuries to jockeys and, increasingly, riders from other disciplines such as eventers. In their lovely classroom, we'll be discussing practical and theoretical care skills relating to the Stage 4 and 5 syllabi:

Stage 4

LO1 Be able to use specialist tack in a safe and efficient manner
LO2 Understand nutritional requirements of horses
LO3 Understand the management of competition horses
LO4 Be able to maintain a horse’s physical wellbeing
LO5 Understand the care of horses

Stage 5

LO2: Evaluate a horse

  • Understand the treatment and management of horses
  • Assess a horse for health, condition and fitness.
  • Assessment of conformation through static and dynamic evaluation, including the assessment of the development of the main muscle groups (St 4)
  • Assessment of fitness through static evaluation, including the assessment of the development of the main muscle groups (St 5).
  • Methods of fittening and maintaining fitness from a basic programme to performance for racing.
  • Biomechanics, veterinary issues, practical considerations and the knowledge of performance requirements. This includes blood testing and other methods to monitor health and fitness.
  • Use of general and specific tack, equipment and training aids.
  • Nutrition, feeding the performance horse in a commercial yard.
  • Biosecurity, management and risk mitigation.
  • Staffing requirements.
  • At the end of the day (3.30pm) there will be an optional tour of the facilities at Oaksey House.

Places are limited to 25 people to ensure a great, small group atmosphere and plenty of opportunity to join in discussions! There will be a lunch break – lunch is not provided, so please bring a packed lunch or be ready to buy something in the village. It goes without saying to dress for the weather for the morning session - and please bring some non-muddy boots to wear inside in the afternoon!

£35 for BHS Accredited Professional Coaches, £40 all others. Please note the reduced rate is ONLY for BHS APCs, not coaches affiliated to other organisations - thank you.

This day has been accredited as CPD for BHS Accredited Professional Coaches and counts for 6 CPD points. Certificates of attendance can be provided on request to coaches requiring CPD for other organisations, but it is your responsibility to check they will accredited the course.
