British Riding Clubs Training and Assessments

Welcome to the British Riding Clubs Training and Assessments pages.

As a member of an affiliated riding club, you can take BRC Riding and Welfare assessments. These are split into Seniors and Juniors and there are two parts to the exam: Riding and Welfare. The riding side of things assesses your riding ability while welfare focuses on stable management.  What is so appealing about these assessments is that they are compatible with the BHS exams.

There are four levels to the Riding and Welfare assessments. If you pass Riding 3 with Jumping and Horse Welfare 3 you gain direct entry onto a BHS Stage 3 exam. However, if you would like to do the BRC assessments without the pressure of jumping as well, you can complete Riding 3B and 4B which has the same elements as Riding 3A and 4A but you would not need to jump any obstacles.

All assessors are part of the British Riding Clubs panel, however your assessor can also be a BHS registered instructor who is a member of a riding club. To become an assessor please go to the Become a Judge or Assessor page for more detailed information.

Ideally potential assessors need to attend assessments with a qualified assessor at level three or above to observe and to gain experience. We organise training weekends and refresher courses for assessors to ensure their knowledge is kept up to date. If you are interested in becoming an assessor, or taking any BRC assessments, please get in touch with Sarah Phillips on 01926 707766 or via email at s.phillips@bhs.org.uk
