Holly Russell – BHS South Yorkshire Safety Officer
We asked Holly why she decided to become a volunteer, what she likes about the role and what she would have to say to anyone thinking of becoming a volunteer. This is what she had to say…...
I decided to volunteer for the BHS as I had been a BHS gold member for several years, working my way through the exam system, gaining much recognised qualifications, and I wanted to get more involved.
I contacted the BHS through the advertisement on their website for a Safety Officer in our area. I thought I would be suited to this role & would be able to use my experience to help others; this is an area that I am very passionate about, after being victim myself to several dog attacks on bridleways & confidence knocking incidences whilst hacking on the roads. I was invited along to a meeting, after successfully applying. I didn't know anyone but I was made to feel very welcome and I was soon getting involved. I feel very much appreciated as part of the committee, something that means a great deal to me. I thoroughly enjoy meeting up with the rest of the committee, helping out with events and generally promoting the BHS, it is a very satisfying role being part of such a fantastic charity, and promoting such an important aspect of the equine world.
On top of my BHS volunteer duties I also volunteer for the BRC and steward at championships shows around the country. This has been an utterly fantastic experience and I was always made to feel very welcome. I attend various events as a BHS volunteer, and I also help organise and promote South Yorkshire BHS events.
I am a competitive rider in many spheres and I travel the country competing in Affiliated BD, County showing in-hand & ridden and the odd hunter trial, hunting, un-affiliated SJ competition and also the odd trip to the beach or national parks for a fun relaxed day out with a change of scenery.
All the committee members at South Yorkshire are very passionate about their roles and a lot goes on behind the scenes, in order to provide such a wide range of events. We are a very friendly group and welcome new people. Your involvement can be as much as you are able to offer. We need your support to carry on providing the amazing services to both Horses & Riders. The BHS are always looking for new committee members and I would encourage anyone to visit the BHS website or Facebook page to see what events, roles etc. are available in your local area. I would also recommend anyone thinking about getting involved to get in touch with your local committee or Regional Manager.
