Safer horse riding routes developed for town

Horse riders can enjoy the countryside more safely now that four new bridleways have opened in Catterick Garrison - thanks to the combined efforts of the County Council’s public rights of way team, The British Horse Society and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).

The partners have worked for a number of years to turn a vision of improved walking, cycle and horse riding routes in the town into a reality. This is the result of many years of work to improve access for all within the Garrison area.

They prioritised essential bridleways from a range of potential routes identified, and the DIO (the Ministry of Defence’s property and services provider) provided expertise and some funding. The new bridleways mean that horse riders can ride through the Garrison without mixing with traffic, and link into quieter routes beyond the town itself.

First to open are two new bridleways providing a safe off-road link from Haig Road to Hipswell Road West, then continuing through to Gough Road.

The good work is set to continue with bridleways linking Catterick Road to Horne Road due to be finalised over the next few weeks and local horse riders hope to identify other possible routes that can be created in the future.

County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Executive Member for rural services said,
“I am pleased to be at the opening of this bridleway which will create better and safer routes for horse riders in and around Catterick Garrison.  This shows what can be achieved when interested parties work together.”

Douglas Bodie (Head of Land Management Services, DIO) said, “The Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s priority is to support our Armed Forces as they prepare for operations, but we are committed to helping local communities – both military and civilian - enjoy their surroundings safely.”
