Recent Events and Future Plans from BHS Grampian

Collaboration with Aberdeenshire Pony Club

During 2018 BHS Grampian have joined forces with Aberdeenshire Pony Club to host several events at Dunecht Estate.  For many years BHS Grampian have run a May Day Show at Aden Park in Mintlaw.  In 2018 a change of venue was put in place by collaborating with the Aberdeenshire Pony Club and the Pony Club field on the Dunecht Estate was used to host the May Show.  A fantastic sunny day set the scene for a great event.  BHS Scotland and Julie Hanna brought along the BHS Scotland tent and Tauds Equestrian came along with their mobile shop.  Food was provided by the renowned Paul and his van and Stephen Hammond was chief photographer for the day.  Competitors had the choice of showing, equitation, show jumping and dressage classes to enter.  With generous support from a host of sponsors an array of fabulous rosettes and trophies were on offer and everyone went home with smiles on their faces after a fantastic day.  This year’s show is planned for Sunday 5 May and will again take place at Dunecht Estate.

BHS Grampian also hosted 2 very successful pleasure rides at Dunecht Estate last year, one for Ride Out UK in May which had fantastic weather and one later in the year in October where the weather was last than ideal.  All riders at both events enjoyed accessing the quiet roads and tracks at the Estate.  Everyone who took part went home with a rosette.  The next pleasure ride at Dunecht is planned for 26 May and we hope to host a ride at another venue later in the year. See the event listing for more information.

MOT day

Last year BHS Grampian trialled running a MOT day at the beginning of the season so members could bring their horses along to get assessed by a range of professionals.  The day proved to be a success with horses getting assessments from an equine physio, saddler, nutritionist and a vet.  Each profession gave a short assessment and offer advice to owners. This year’s professionals are Tara Forrest from Perform Chartered Physios, one of the vets from Ardene House Vet Practice, Katharine Mieras from Top Spec and local saddler Nicky Torbett.

Talks

BHS Grampian host several talks on various equine subjects every year.  Subjects have ranged from veterinary to nutrition to careers in the equine industry with many subjects in between.  This year we are pleased to welcome Dr Philippa Morrison from SRUC who will be speaking about Equine Obesity and current research associated with obesity.  Philippa will be joining us later in the year at Westhill Holiday Inn.  On 27 March Emma Stewart from BD Scotland will be speaking about clean sport and the considerations competitors should be thinking about for themselves and their horses when taking part in competitors.
