There was a great turnout for the BHS South and East Kent Annual Review and the committee finished the years fundraising for The Grass Sickness Appeal bringing the total to £227.45!
The meeting was finished off with an evening of side saddle presented by Claire Lewis BHS II, Side Saddle Association ‘A’ Instructor and former European side saddle Champion. Members had the opportunity to see how side saddles where fitted and the correct attire that riders wear in competition, including some beautiful authentic period costumes. There were demonstrations from junior riders through to side saddle champions; on a wide variety of horses and ponies from ex race horses, cobs and warm bloods. Claire emphasised that all the horses she has worked with over the years ride just as well side saddle as they do astride.
The audience where even shown the riders jumping a course of fences as well as the horses performing half pass and lines of changes to a very high level. The evening explained all the in’s and out’s of side saddle from starting horses and riders, through to how the riders sit and balance on the horses in their work and left the audience with a real insight into the elegance of side saddle as a ridden sport.
