Congratulations to Sonia Wilkes for passing her Stage 5 (formerly known as BHSI).
Sonia started riding when she was eight or nine. She was lucky enough to have her first loan pony when she was eleven and her first horse when she was fourteen. In between, Sonia helped out in a local riding school (all day every day if she could) for free rides.
She has worked in the equine industry ever since leaving college in 1996. Sonia began as an event groom where she was fortunate to ride some wonderful horses as well as groom at many of the big three day events. This Sonia says was one of the most valuable experiences of her career. Sonia believes it was this foundation that allowed her to progress on to further develop her own riding skills and teaching practice. Sonia went on to become a junior instructor at a busy BHS yard in Bucks where she then progressed to Head Girl and gained her BHSII.
Sonia has worked at Hadlow College within the equine department for over ten years now where she has undertaken a variety of roles. Sonia started as Yard Manager and is now Head of the Department. These roles have given Sonia some fantastic opportunities to train and compete the young horses that are bred at the college. Sonia says "she works with a wonderful team who share her passion to inspire and support young people to develop their skills and begin their own equine careers."
