Succes for the BHS and local volunteers in Hoddesdon and Brickendon

17 Apr 2015

After much pressure from the BHS and local volunteers, BHS members and horse riders in Hoddesdon and Brickendon will be delighted to learn that RB 24 Brickendon, Roman Ermine Street, has at last been cleared and reinstated.

For those who have not followed this saga, two years ago the landowner dug trenches across the ROW and its Roman and medieval archaeology, at its junction on the south side of Cock Lane Brickendon, erected barbed wire entanglements and a locked gate complete with threatening notices, and also pulled down butchered trees, completely blocking access to the Definitive route.

The landowner claimed that the existing track was not on the definitive line of the route and made his own entrance 100 metres to the east of the original track, where users had to cross a ditch and muddy embankment strewn with broken glass on a blind bend in Cock Lane.

Many thanks to Hertfordshire Rights of way Team for their successful enforcement!
