Judith YeomansJudith Yeomans, BHS Founder Member
14 April 1934 - 20 June 2014

Judith was born in Derbyshire and started riding at the age of 12 when she went to boarding school in Northampton. By the age of 17 she was a qualified riding teacher. Her first riding school was at Quarndon, then she had a school at Hazlewood which was the biggest indoor riding school in England at the time. Her last riding school from 1970 to 1984 was at Kirk Ireton. She was a member of ABRS.

Judith's equestrian interests were extensive.

As a competitor in the early 1960s she achieved first place in the lightweight hunter at the Horse of the Year Show four times and in 1963 was also Reserve Champion. She also competed in dressage riding side saddle and as a show jumper.

She owned horses which appeared in several films including The Wicked Lady, a 1983 film starring Faye Dunaway, Alan Bates and John Gielgud.

Judith was heavily involved with the RDA and HAPPA and was a founder member of both the Derbyshire Horse and Pony Society and The British Horse Society. In 2004 she was awarded the BHS Award of Merit and in 2010 she received a long service award for 40 years as a BHS Volunteer.

She worked with the Meynell Hunt and has helped to train police riders. Judith was a divisional superintendent for the St John Ambulance and founded the Mounted division.

As a BHS Derbyshire chairman and committee member Judith worked tirelessly for road safety, rights of way and was instrumental in developing the Carsington circular ride.

I knew Judith for 20 years when she first recruited me to the BHS Derbyshire Committee. Her help and encouragement helped me achieve my position first as county and now as regional chairman and her experience and knowledge will be sadly missed.
