Former National Hunt jockey and Grand National Winner, Bob Champion MBE inspired a large audience at the BHS Derbyshire review meeting at Ashover Parish Hall.
He was at the height of his career as a jump jockey when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and then went through debilitating treatment and suffered life-threatening septicaemia before overcoming the disease.
Memorably, after his recovery two years later he went on to win the Grand National in 1981 on Aldaniti, a courageous horse who had also battled with setbacks but took them both to victory.
Bob went on to write his autobiography and Stephen Spielberg told his story in the film ’Champions’. He has gone on to set up the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, which has raised over £10 million to pay for a ground breaking research laboratory that works for the treatment and ultimate eradication of male cancers.
Thanks to Bob for an inspiring talk and to County Vice-Chairman, Ruth Dodd and County Safety Officer, Zoe Horne for organising the evening - which also included an excellent supper!
