Saffron Walden and District Riding Club won the British Riding Clubs Quadrille Final, sponsored by South Essex Insurance Brokers Ltd, at Olympia, the London International Horse Show on Saturday 21 December.
The Essex-based team sealed the victory with a near foot-perfect performance of their ‘Send in the Clowns’ routine. The winning team members were Claire Engelman (Taffy), Suzannah Engelmann (Jim), Bethany Brown (Ozzie) and Emily Edgar (George). They received their trophy from Nicky Mackenzie, Marketing Manager of SEIB.
The scores were extremely close, with just two points separating the winning team and the members of Bath Riding Club who finished in second place with their fairy themed routine, ‘Do you believe?’. Three Rivers Riding Club were third with their Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers routine, with the team from Cornwall TREC Group who performed a Mary Poppins themed routine to finish in fourth place.
The teams in the final were judged by Nick Brooks-Ward, Judy Firmston-Williams and Barry Hopkins. They concentrated on three main areas; content, performance and artistic impression – as well as a turnout score where riders and horses costumes were scrutinised.
Speaking on behalf of the judges, Barry Hopkins said: “We were delighted with the standard of all the teams, which was reflected in the closeness of the marks.”
