Riding & Road Safety Examiners

Riding & Road Safety Examiners are generally drawn from the wide team of Riding & Road Safety Trainers. They will have had experience of training candidates for their test and be able to provide evidence of having done so. Gold members of the BHS, over 21 years of age and with a minimum of three years training experience, potential examiners need to apply in the first instance to the Safety Department for a Probationary Examiners pack. This will give them all the information that they need to get started.

Returning the application form to the Safety Department, notifies us that they are working towards the qualification. They have to attend a minimum of three tests as a probationer, working with the Chief Examiner and Co-Examiner. The County Safety representative will appoint the probationers to tests. At the end of each test, the Chief Examiner will complete a carbon-copy report of the way in which the probationer has performed during the test. Their report is returned to the Safety Department with the test paperwork and once there are three good reports on the file, the County Safety representative will be required to write to the Safety Department making a recommendation that the probationary examiner is appointed as a full Examiner.

Their name will then be put before the Safety Advisory Committee for ratification by them and the Examiner will be able to move on with their chosen path. However, before their qualification is complete, they will be required to attend a QCA training day, where they will learn the correct way in which to mark the QCA test paperwork. They will already be familiar with this process having worked with it whilst they are under probation, but it is a requirement that they undertake specific training in this process to complete their training.

After that, Examiners are required to update their qualification by attending training at least once every two years on whatever topic the Safety Advisory Training Committee have decided is necessary. Training for Examiners and Trainers is carried out annually in each BHS region, some regions due to their geographical make-up, have two such days each year and these days are notified around Christmas to each Safety Examiner and Trainer. They are widely publicised on the BHS Safety website, in British Horse and other BHS publications.
