BHS Overseas Examinations

The BHS examination system is not only established in the UK but has BHS Exam Centres in Hong Kong, and the USA.

There are many benefits of having exams abroad. It educates people from different cultures and climates, correctly in the care and training of horses and provides them with an opportunity to gain a professional qualification.

The BHS examination system is recognised worldwide. It is currently possible to sit Stages 1, 2, 3 and the Preliminary Teaching Test overseas. Exams are usually taken in English, however our assessors, selected for their experience in examining overseas, are used to working through an interpreter. The standard is kept level to those in the UK, although some stable management duties may differ slightly from the UK, for instance if the climate is hot and humid.

As in the UK, people take the exams for a variety of reasons. They may be recreational riders, wanting to improve their knowledge on the care and handling of horses, or they may wish to further improve their riding skills. They may want to work professionally with horses and this will give them a thorough training and worthwhile credible qualification. British Horse Society Exams are recognised by the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications, of which there are over 30 member countries.

In the past some countries have not had access to education, for which the horse has suffered. It is good to think that the British Horse Society plays an important role in benefiting the horses’ welfare through correct training. The work that has been done in Hong Kong is filtering through to other far eastern countries, as trained qualified people are travelling out to help these areas.

Whilst it is possible to sit BHS Exams at overseas centres in Spain, Hong Kong and the USA, there are many more BHS Approved Riding and Training Establishments world wide. There are also a number of BHS Registered Instructors based overseas, all doing excellent work promoting horse welfare through the training they offer.
