BHS Preliminary Teachers Certificate

The BHSPT is the first recognised teaching certificate on the Instructor’s ladder and is awarded to those passing the Preliminary Teaching Test.

In order for candidates to progress from BHSPT to BHSAI they are required to complete a Coaching Portfolio, which they will receive after booking for the PTT exam.

Candidates are required to complete a number of tasks, which will be externally assessed by an independent assessor, who they should contact directly. Learning Resources for the UK Coaching Certificates have been produced by the BEF.

Following successful assessment of the coaching portfolio candidates can then apply for the BHSAI certificate, if they also hold the full BHS Stage 3.

Alternatively candidates may progress to the BHS IT following validation of their portfolio by the exams office.

The following documents would also need to be submitted along with the Coaching Portfolio:

• BHS  First Aid certificate or four day Health and Safety First Aid at Work

• BEF or Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children - certificate of attendance (previously Child Protection workshop)

Candidates who passed the PTT prior to January 2007 will still be required to complete and log 500 hours teaching experience (25 percent of which may be Stable Management lectures). In exceptional circumstances applicants may be eligible for full/partial exemption from the required 500 hours teaching practice.

Holders of the BHSPT are also eligible to join the BHS Register of Instructors.
