BHS Instructor

The BHSI is a rigorous exam comprising of three sections – the Senior Equitation and Coaching Exam and the Stable Manager’s Exam. Together, these exams make up the full BHSI qualification. It does not matter in which order the sections are taken.

Those who have achieved the Intermediate Stable Manager’s certificate can take the Stable Manager’s exam. Those who have achieved the Intermediate Stable managers can take the Stable Managers exam.  Those who have achieved the Stage 4 riding exam can take the Senior Equitation exam.  Those who achieve the Intermediate Teaching Test can take the Senior Coach exam.

Much hard work and dedication is required to achieve the BHSI examination. It is not an exam for which you can go to a centre to train for a few months – you really must be ‘out there and doing it’. The BHSI is qualified to teach riders to the level of Advanced Medium Dressage, Intermediate Horse Trials and Foxhunter level Show Jumping.

Stable Manager’s

Candidates who attempt this exam must be working in the industry, must be competent and confident in all aspects of horse care and management. In the Stable Manager’s examination, candidates will attend either a morning or an afternoon exam. Candidates will be tested on their practical handling skills, theoretical knowledge, business acumen and lecturing skills. Successful candidates at this level are mature, knowledgeable, practical horse people.

BHS Senior Equitation and Coaching certificate

The Senior Equitation and Coaching examination will last for a full day. Assessors are looking for a person who is a confident, stylish, effective rider with sound training principles both on the flat, over fences and working with horses from the ground. It is an advantage to a candidate if they are actively competing themselves and training riders. Riders must be confident riding a variety of horses. They must be practical, personable, talented and enthusiastic.
